Right now my big thing is communication. I recently had a discussion that was born out of the question: “what can average people do to stop the war” (we were assuming, yes, the war should be stopped, and yes, the war in Iraq.) The discussion centered around a person’s boundaries and the extent to which we communicate with other people.
In this country we’re taught be selfish, doing what is in our best interest. We go to work, talk about nothing meaningful, complain about petty irritations and go home, wondering why we feel empty (this is, of course, speaking in general terms). We go home to an empty house about 15-50 miles away, and watch the glowing box of truth until we get sleepy. We’re not encouraged to go out and make friends with neighbors.
So I’ve started purposefully talking to people I would never have been ‘meant’ to talk to, meaning people I would normally avoid because ‘I have to get somewhere’ or ‘I really don’t have an excuse, I’m just pretending I do’. People in the elevator, in line at the homeless shelter, the cleaning staff, dude who sold me a sandwich. How are you, how is your day going, basic stuff. Maybe a joke. Unlikely conversations. See you later, nice talking to you. And then this is maybe followed up the next time you see them in the street. Bonds start to form.
I’m referring to the human (or beyond) collective consciousness that lies underneath us and is for the most part, blocked. If these connections, on a grand scale, are made, does humanity as a collectively benefit? Our country is a mess because we’re not organized in the right way. We’re not in line with one another. And the group of people who claim to be our leaders are, for the most part, on a path for which we didn’t vote. Can we change this by communicating on a more personal level?
My question is: can forming deep social or spiritual bonds with people outside of your peer group be a good inroad to such issues as racism, greed, crime, poverty, homelessness, etc.?
